Curtain Buying Guide

Curtain Buying Guide: Smart Style for Real Homes

Freshen up any room with curtains that look beautiful and work hard for your home. This guide takes you through styles, fabrics, linings, measuring, hardware and sizes—so you can choose with confidence and enjoy them every day.

1) Pick your curtain style

Your curtain header sets the tone. It affects the look, how the fabric hangs, and how it fits to your pole or track.

Eyelet

Modern and fuss-free. Large metal rings slide onto a pole, creating smooth, even folds. Perfect for quick updates and contemporary spaces.

Pencil Pleat

Classic and versatile. Adjustable drawstrings let you gather to your chosen fullness. Works with a track or pole using hooks.

Pinch Pleat

Neatly sewn-in pleats give a smart, tailored look. Great for formal rooms or where you want a polished finish.

Tab Top / Slot Top

Casual and decorative. Fabric loops or a sewn-in slot thread onto a pole. Best for lightweight curtains and voiles.

Wave / Ripple

Ultra-smooth folds on a specialist track. A designer finish for wide or picture windows.

2) Choose your fabric

  • Lightweight: voiles, sheers or linen-blends keep rooms airy and bright.
  • Midweight: cottons and blends balance style with easy care.
  • Heavyweight: velvets or chenilles add cosiness, block light and feel indulgent.

3) Pick your lining

  • Blackout: best for bedrooms and movie nights; blocks light and adds body.
  • Thermal: reduces draughts and balances room temperature all year.
  • Standard lined: neatens the hang, protects fabric and softens light.
  • Unlined/Voile: sheer, breezy and perfect for layering.

4) Ready Made or Made to Measure?

Ready Made: quick, great value and available in popular sizes. Perfect for standard windows and easy refreshes.

Made to Measure: tailored to tricky spaces or bay windows, with your exact size, fabric and finish for a designer look.

5) How to measure

Step A — Fit your pole or track first

  • Position ~15cm above the window and extend 15–20cm each side.
  • Add a 2.5cm overlap at the centre so curtains meet neatly.

Step B — Measure the width

  • Measure the pole or track only (exclude finials).
  • Fullness guide:
    • Eyelet: 2 × pole/track width
    • Pencil Pleat: 2–2.5 × pole/track width
    • Pinch Pleat: 2 × pole/track width
    • Tab Top: 1.5 × pole/track width

Step C — Measure the drop

  • Track: measure from top of track.
  • Pole with hooks: measure from the eye of the hook.
  • Eyelets: measure from top of the pole.
  • Choose your finish:
    • Sill length: 1.25cm above sill
    • Below sill: ~15cm below sill
    • Floor length: 1.25cm above floor, or add extra for a “pooled” look
  • Tip: finish ~3cm above radiators so heat can circulate.

6) Poles, tracks & hardware

  • Poles: decorative and sturdy, perfect for most headers.
  • Tracks: discreet and smooth, ideal for bay or wide windows.
  • Extendable options: easy to fit, but always check weight limits.
  • Tie-backs & holdbacks: practical and decorative, keeping curtains tidy.

7) Curtain Size Chart

Choosing the right curtain size is simple when you know what to look for. Curtain sizes are always shown as width × drop.

53–58" × 72" 132–145cm × 183cm
53–58" × 90" 132–145cm × 229cm

Smart Measuring Tips

  • Always measure the full width of your pole or track (exclude finials).
  • Choose a pair with combined width of 1.5–2× your pole/track for a fuller look.
  • Drop is measured from the top of the heading (or eyelet) to your chosen finish length.

8) Smart styling tips

  • Mount poles higher and wider than the window for a taller, brighter look.
  • Layer voiles with lined or blackout curtains to balance privacy, light and warmth.
  • If unsure, size up—hems can be adjusted, but length can’t be added later.

Beautiful living made simple. With the right style, fabric, lining and size, your curtains will be both practical and stylish—making your home feel instantly refreshed.
